About Obstructive Sleep Apnea (O.S.A)
It is estimated that about four percent of men and two percent of women from 30 to 60 years old are affected by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This sleep disorder is characterized by repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep with periods of breathing cessation. Most individuals with OSA have a history of snoring and may unknowingly have frequent arousals during the night. This results in chronic daytime sleepiness and fatigue. If left untreated, OSA may lead to more severe medical conditions, such as hypertension, stroke, heart disease, and metabolic issues that can cause weight gain.
With greater awareness and recognition of this diagnosis, treatment, and on-going management of OSA, individuals with this disorder can significantly improve their health, productivity, and quality of life.
